In January 2007 my friend Ali & I decided to join the local Iyengar Yoga studio here in Tooting (south west London) – as it had opened up in our street we had no excuse for not at least trying it out! It’s now almost a year to the day since my first class, and although I’m not THE most regular of members, I attend about once a week on average, and love every minute of it!

The wonderful thing that I experienced with Iyengar Yoga, and with John as our main teacher, is that even someone like me, with little flexibility and chronic knee problems, could see significant benefits within a short time. I was doing gym twice-weekly with a personal trainer, but my knees continued to give me real pain, despite my increased fitness. Iyengar Yoga has some excellent restorative poses, and you also learn that you are doing yoga for YOU – there is no competition; it’s not a place to compare yourself to others in any way. Within weeks of starting (and attending weekly beginners classes) my knee pain was significantly better, and now (added to the weight I’ve been losing) I’m a whole lot more flexible and almost completely pain free! What a result!

So give those New Years resolutions a boost and try a yoga class – your body will thank you for it :-)
